I GOT TO SHOOT A GWAR SHOW AND IT WAS THE BEST!
Seriously though; the first three songs of the GWAR set (3 and done for photogs) was easily the most fun I have ever had with a camera in my hand.
The venue (930 Club), baptizes all new staff members by making them work the pit whenever GWAR comes to town, thereby dousing them with fake blood and the crazies that attend such events. There were about 6-7 bouncers up front plus another 3-4 photographers (I don’t remember the exact count) along side me so the photo pit was pretty crowded.
That, coupled with the deranged crowd behind me and visual spectacle on stage meant the time spent taking pics went something like:
Click-Click-Click *pause for tap on shoulder*
Help bouncer yank crowd surfer out of some melee
*duck the fake blood cannon*
"OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???"
Help bouncer yank another spastic person out of the crowd
*change position* Click-Click-Click-Click *duck the blood cannon again* etc
Protip: If you are ever presented with the opportunity to shoot photos of a GWAR show, take it immediately. And cover your camera body with Saran Wrap.
